THE QUESTION ABOUT SAME SEX MARRIAGE

We have already tackled about the questions in Miss Pitogo Islands pageant night last time.
I hope you already have an idea of what kind of questions the organization is asking during
the question and answer portion. Now, there is one question that is very hard for the candidates
to answer and that is the question about same-sex marriage. It was like if a candidate accidentally
chooses this question, it is already a goodbye kiss in bagging the Miss Pitogo Islands crown.

The first time this question was asked, the candidate stumbled and did not know what were
the right words to answer. The same thing happened last August 9. The candidate that had
picked this question did not have the right idea to answer it. It is now very puzzling why this
question is really hard for the candidates. The hurling issue about same-sex marriage should already
be absorbed by the youth these days. Now, let us talk a bit about same-sex marriage as an issue.

The issue about legalizing same-sex marriage all over the world has been dividing the people in
half - the pros and cons. The anti-gays or the people that are against the LGBT movement all
over the world have had various reasons why same-sex marriage should not be legalized. Here are
some of their reasons:

1.     Gay marriage violates tradition. Marriage should just be between a man and a woman and it
should always be. A man is for a woman and vice versa, and not the other way around.

2.     Gay couples cannot produce children. The vision of gays having a family will always be in the wrong way. They cannot build a family. A family composes of a father, mother and children or just a child and they cannot produce a child of their own.

3.     Legalizing same-sex marriage will lead to polygamy. Gays are known for their habits of fooling around therefore it is not good for them to marry.

4.     Homosexual behavior is immoral and should be discouraged. It is stated in the bible that it is a sin when one will have sex with his fellow male or fellow female.

And so on and so forth. There are plenty of reasons why same-sex marriage should not be legalized in a country or a state.

Here in the Philippines, legalizing same-sex marriage is still a far cry even though the LGBT community
here is very active.

It was reported this year that in Quezon City there is already an ordinance related to the third
sex having the right against discrimination – this is the City Ordinance on Gender Fair
aka Anti-Discrimination Ordinance. But same-sex couples still cannot be married under this Code
because the Family Code of the Philippines states that marriage is (only) between man and woman.

“The family Code’s concept of marriage as a contract between a man and a woman aside from being
obsolete, violates the equal protection clause of the Constitution. In my opinion to bar the lesbians, the
gays, the transsexuals and the homosexuals from the civil right to marry would violate the guarantee of
equal protection. It also intrudes into the right to privacy which is a fundamental right”, Pacifico Agabin,
a former law dean of the University of the Philippines was quoted by The Inquirer during a professional
lecture given by retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Jose Vitug last 2014.

Legalizing same-sex marriage here in the Philippines is really a big battle for the LGBT community.
Well, as long as what you do will not lead to hurting other people then perhaps you are in the right
track and that you should always stand and fight for it.

I hope that next time this question will be asked,(if it happens again)the candidate already knows what
particular side should she be standing regarding this issue. I always hope that this question will not remain
as a jinx in clinching the Miss Pitogo Islands crown.
